Brigadier General Simeon Olaosebikan Apata was a respected Nigerian military officer who became widely known years after his death because he was the father of popular Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni.

But long before Nigerians knew Teni’s music, Simeon Apata was already a notable figure in military and political circles during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods.

He served in the Nigerian Army and reportedly held the rank of Brigadier General. During the military era, senior officers often carried enormous influence, especially under governments dominated by military rulers.

Apata was said to have been connected to political movements during the chaotic years following the annulment of the June 12 1993 presidential election won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

According to reports from that period, Simeon Apata was killed by unknown gunmen in Lagos on January 8, 1995. The murder happened during the tense military rule of General Sani Abacha, a time infamously known for political repression, assassinations, arrests, and fear across the country.

The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear even decades later. Like several politically sensitive killings during the 1990s, rumours and suspicions circulated widely, but no universally accepted explanation ever fully emerged.

What makes the story even more emotional for many Nigerians today is that Teni was still very young when her father died. In interviews over the years, she has occasionally spoken about the pain of losing him and how it affected her family.

Teni continues to enjoy the fame, recognition, and financial rewards that come with a thriving music career.

Her breakout hits like “Case” and “Billionaire” connected strongly with listeners, and she has followed them up with several other well-received tracks. In 2018, she won the Headies “Rookie of the Year,” was named Best New Artiste at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival, and also received the Most Promising Act to Watch award at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

That same year, she earned a nomination for “Best New International Act” at the BET Awards. With achievements like these, her influence in the industry has continued to grow steadily.

Not many people realise this, but the Apata family is quite prominent. Teni’s older sister, Niniola Apata, is also a successful Nigerian musician.

Part of Simeon Olaosebikan Apata’s legacy is the establishment of Apata’s legacy High School, an elite military-style private boarding school in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1980.

The school, reported to have about 1550 pupils and 150 teachers, is regarded as a leading school in Oshodi-Isolo local government and one of the best in Lagos state, attracting wards of the Nigerian elite.
