On the 15th of January, 1966, Nigeria had her first coup d’état which ushered in her military era. Below are the heads of states of Nigeria from 1966 till 1999.
1. Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi (January 16, 1966 – July 12, 1966) 177 days
2. General Yakubu Gowon (August 1, 1966 – July 29, 1975) 8 years, 362 days
3. General Murtala Mohammed (July 29, 1975 – February 13, 1976) 199 days
4. Major-General Olusegun Obasanjo (February 13, 1976 – October 1, 1979) 3 years, 258 days
5. Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (December 31, 1983 – August 27, 1985) 1 year, 239 days
6. General Ibrahim Babangida
(August 27, 1985 – August 26, 1993) 7 years, 364 days
7. General Sani Abacha (November 17,1993 – June 8, 1998) 4 years, 203 days
8. General Abdulsalami Abubakar
(June 8, 1998 – May 29, 1999) 355 days
