February 18 in Nigeria’s History: Soldiers Burned Kalakuta Republic, Wole Soyinka Was Named FRSC Inaugural Chairman

Orchestrated in two very different years, but the 18th of February is a milestone to music lovers and road users in Nigeria as the famous Kalakuta Shrine belonging to Afrobeat Legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was burnt down by unknown soldiers on this day, 18th of Ferbuary in 1977.

This was believed to be in reaction to his hit song “Zombie” which spoke against the activities of the Military. Fela is forever remembered as not only a top notch musician, but a human right activist.

Also on this day in the year 1988, Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida signed the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) into existence with Nobel Laureate winner, Prof. Wole Soyinka as its first chairman.

Fun Fact: Fela Ransome-Kuti and Prof. Soyinka are cousins!
