Yankari National Park

Yankari National Park is a widelife park situated in Bauchi State in the north-eastern part of Nigeria. The widelife park in the south-central part of Bauchi covers an estimated area of 2.244 square kilometers.. The park was originally created as a game reserve in 1956, but was later upgraded into a national park in 1991. Yankari National park housed several species of wild animals such as patas monkey, Tantalus monkey, roan antelope, western hartebeest, lion, African buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck and was known to have the largest elephant population in Nigeria. The park has a peculiar vegetation of Sudan savanna suitable for wildlife.

Yankari National Park served as one of the most visited tourist center in Nigeria and West Africa. More than 15,000 tourist and vacation-makers visit the park annually which contributed to the promotion of tourism and ecotourism in Nigeria.
The best time for tourists to see the animals and enjoy their amusing activities is between December and late April before the rainy period, when the animals would gather at the Gaji river to quench their thirst. Tourist are allowed to tour the park in their own car or rent the park’s safari jeep for the sum of N300 for two hours with an escort/security to guide the tourists.

Another attraction in the Yankari park is the Wikki warm spring located near the park’s campsite, 42 kilometers from the main-gate. The Yankari National park remain as one of the leading tourism center in Nigeria.
